The track team had their first meet of the season against Irvington High School on March 20, 2014 at TAK Fudenna Stadium.

The final overall score for the team was Girls Frosh./Soph. 87 (AHS)-44 (ISH), Girls Var. 81-55, Boys Frosh./Soph. 34-93, and Boys Var. 59-76, with both boys groups losing, but both girls divisions winning.

“We started the meet off with the 4 by 100 relays, which I was in,” junior Samuel Shing said. “It started off well, but I slowed down near the end and the hand-offs weren’t great either.”
Although the team got off to a rocky start, the team picked up and did better as the events went on.

Senior Shanelle Swamy clears the high jump. The varsity girls swept in both the 100 meter sprints and the long jump. “Even though the team did well this year, I’m really hoping that more people will join track next season. We need more serious athletes on the team,” Shing said. PC: Karen Ku

“I was in four different events this time, the 4 by 100 relays, the 100 meter sprint, the 200 meter sprint, and the long jump,” senior Maggie Chan said. “Overall, I think it was a very good first meet. Both our girls won, and our guys had exciting 4 by 400 races at the very end. Both teams were behind in the beginning but made miraculous comebacks for the last two legs.”

Despite the boys losing overall, the team kept the morale high throughout the meet.

“Since it was the first meet, everyone was excited and cheering each other on and it was pretty fun,” Shing said. “Especially during those last 4 by 400 races where the guys really pulled through for the team.”

With their first meet behind them, the athletes look forward to fulfilling their own goals for the season.

“My goal is to PR (personal record) in the 100 and long jump,” Chan said. “Hopefully I’ll get into NCS again for long jump. It’s my last year on the team, so I just to have a fun season.”

The next track meet is a tri-meet with Mission San Jose High School and Moreau Catholic High School; it will be held on April 2, 2014.
