On September 25, 2013, Whole Foods Market held a grand opening for their new store in Fremont.
Residents of Fremont had been eagerly awaiting its arrival since the beginning of the year.
It is the first Whole Foods Market in the Tri-City Area, but what exactly sets it apart from other grocery stores, like Safeway or Lucky?
“Whole Foods offers healthy and unique options that you probably wouldn’t find in regular supermarkets,” senior Iman Niazi said. “Also, it carries food from all over the world which allows people to try new and different things.”
Whole Foods Market was founded in Austin, Texas in 1980 when four local businesspeople decided that natural foods should be offered to people in the familiar format of supermarkets. Since then, 364 stores have popped up all over the U.S., Canada, and even the U.K.

The popular grocery store also takes pride in sourcing locally from the community.
“Whole Foods carries food grown locally which helps out businesses,” senior Tanishtha Kapoor said.
The Fremont store has local vendors which include Niles Pie Co. in Union City, Ramavtar Singh Farm in Fremont, Foolish Hen Farms in Sunol, and Perry Organic Farms in Ardenwood. Perry Organic Farms provides produce such as cauliflower and lettuce.
Features unique to the Fremont location are a fresh juice and smoothie bar, a bakery, a Smokehouse Grill, hot food stations, a coffee bar, and the Mission Peak Tap Alley, which features beverages from local breweries.
“My favorite feature of the store would have to be the beverage section,” Niazi said. “Personally, I love trying different drinks and Whole Foods offers a number of drinks that you can’t get anywhere else, such as European beverages.”
Another quality of Whole Foods that people find appealing is its mission in giving back to the community.
“I recently found out that at some times in the year Whole Foods donates part of its profits to community organizations,” freshman Reena Dosanjh said. “I think that’s a great thing.”
The primary organizations Whole Foods in Fremont donates to are Fremont Leaf, Abode Services, the Fremont Education Foundation, Tri-City Volunteers, and the India Community Center (Milpitas).
The Fremont Whole Foods Market is located on 3111 Mowry Avenue and is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
