Students gained an hour of sleep, just to be tired for the rest of the day
The fall daylight saving time of 2025 has already taken a big toll on people. Though it may seem amazing to gain an extra hour of sleep, this extra hour throws off many people’s sleep schedules. It can lead to grogginess throughout the day and affect performance in school, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Though these effects are possible, the opposite is also true for students. Since falling back does give people an extra hour of sleep, they may just feel tired from the school day.
Ayaan Arif (11), who was in AHSPA’s The Play That Goes Wrong, said, “Sometimes you’ll be really tired, and then I will be light-headed during rehearsals. But I think that would be more due to the school day and not the lack of sleep.” Though daylight savings may not affect Ayaan’s performance, it does affect others in sports. Athletes on the football team felt worse than before, finding effects from differences in routine and practice.
Marvin Boone (11), an athlete on the varsity football team, stated, “Once it reached a certain point, I wasn’t able to see as much effort from myself, so it did affect me. [Since it got dark sooner] you had to move faster, and since it got colder, you had to work harder.”
Yet, Nasir Adams (11), another athlete on the varsity football team, said, “I don’t think daylight savings really affected me. I was still getting the same amount of sleep as usual, and during practice, I didn’t really feel that much of a difference from usual.”
Arushi Naidu is a senior who was in the play. “Since we have phones, it doesn’t really make a difference, but I think I like stepping out of rehearsal when it is dark outside. It was nice.” Similar to Arif’s view on the effect of daylight savings, since they are both facing similar workloads and time constraints with the rehearsals for the play.
In AHS, daylight saving time had its fair share of effects on people, since people like athletes and performers in the play had similar experiences, having faced the same problem of the sky getting darker an hour earlier than before. Seeing from the perspective of the athletes and performers, they preferred the sky getting darker earlier and actually didn’t see a difference in their activities.
