Where does one draw the line at “too much candy”?

You’re skipping around the nighttime streets with your friends—bright costumes and screams galore. A candy basket weighs heavy in your hand, a surefire sign of a plentiful harvest that will surely last for months to come. The next day, you eat candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And the next day. And the day after that.

Pretty soon you’ve gotten sick of having candy, but this is only the start of the horrors. Even as the days go by, the candy pile hasn’t changed; it just sits and festers in the corner of your closet, staring menacingly at you.

Since Halloween, countless children have been complaining about what to do with their excessive candy stockpile. This sentiment is well summarized by Jakoh Lanturn (10), a seasoned trick-or-treater. “This year when I opened my pantry, I got buried under a flood of fossilized candy from last year. I think some of this stuff might even be from 2020.”

“Candy is like a flower; it’s only interesting when it’s new. By the time it gets old, no one wants to eat it anymore,” said Mort Ishen (9) (Photo Credit: Natalie Tchao (10)).

However, some students turn to alternative methods to get rid of this surplus. Itza De Saster (11) has established a candy trade of sorts with her peers. “It works like a charm! All I need to do is tell my friends what I’m offering for the day, and they give me the ones they know I’ll eat. That way, nothing goes to waste, and everybody gets what they want.”

Unfortunately, not all these attempts to remedy the candy crisis have been successful. Some students found themselves dissatisfied with similar strategies of trading their candies. For instance, Carrie Ahn (9) described her personal experience with trying to get rid of her candy. “There was a little candy market at school that I tried, but I always brought back more candy than I knew that I would eat, going from 1 KitKat to 2 Snickers bars. Even giving them away doesn’t work! People just bring me all the ones no one wants.”

While the candy problem may be different from person to person, one thing is for sure: these leftovers from Halloween will haunt the dreams of many for a long, long while and don’t intend to leave any time soon.
