A recap of this year’s varsity girls golf season

As athletes sheathed their golf clubs back into their golf bags, the girls golf team concluded the fall season with high spirits and placed second in the Mission Valley Athletic League. From overcoming strong opponents like Moreau Catholic to mastering complicated courses, the team’s outstanding performance highlighted their growth over the season.
Compared to previous seasons where the team consistently ranked in the bottom half of MVAL standings, the girls golf team improved significantly this fall. Erin Park, a team captain and a senior, said, “I think we did extremely well this season. Being able to get second place awards in competitions like MVALs when we normally would not place very high just goes to show how much we grew from last season to this season.”
The major victories of the season, such as one defeat of Mission with a score of 241-245 in a league game, were in large part due to the team’s underclassmen stepping up to the competition. Park said, “We were victorious this season mainly because our underclassmen were able to pull through. Over half of our team consisted of underclassmen this season, and them just being able to show up and do their best really boosted the team’s performance as a whole.”
Coach Peffer added, “The athletes are very supportive of each other, exchanging words of encouragement and reassurance before and during matches, and they all hope that their fellow competitors do their best as well.”
With more new and skilled players entering the team, they were able to perform well in crucial games. Mai Preisser, a senior on the team, said, “This was one of our best seasons. During MVALs, two members, Dyah Kumar (10) and Kalie Ho (9) did a wonderful job representing us, and the rest of the team also performed well. Mr. Peffer always says that our goal is to get out there and have fun, but this year apart from enjoying the matches, we also brought back results, getting second place in the district.”
Reflecting on the triumph-filled season, the team is still setting its sights on a brighter future. Preisser said, “For anyone who thinks they want to try out golf, just go for it. Initially, I was also intimidated to join a school sport, but if you put in the work, you can really improve and establish strong bonds with people you otherwise would not have met.”
