Climate change has gotten to the point where the world is 1.5 degrees Celsius hotter than it should be. The U.S. The government has finally restarted the debate about the climate change topic.

Climate change is a global problem that has been around for 130 years, and will likely still be around for a very long time unless officials do something about it. This could become a bigger topic than it currently is in the future, but right now, there are a few main ways that AHS can implement climate change combat in this school. The first way could be a recycling program that could be run by a certain club or organization within the school. The second could be a compost program, run by Living Earth and APES teachers or a club. Composting reduces the amount of greenhouse gases passed to the atmosphere, but aerobic composting (composting with decomposers that need air to survive) specifically reduces the amount of methane released into the atmosphere. Methane is a transparent and highly flammable gas that traps heat inside the atmosphere.

“Composting is one of the easiest things we can do to reduce methane gas. So, when food is thrown into trash, it ends up at a landfill and that landfill it’ll end up producing methane,” said Ms. Wheaton, an AP Environmental Science teacher, as she talks about greenhouse gases which are vital to our atmosphere, but too much of the gases can trap the heat in our atmosphere, therefore leading to global warming. “If we could have a compost program? That’s great. And in the past, I was the only one running it, and it’s too much to put on one teacher.” she said. She wishes for AHS to become more passionate about spreading awareness about climate change. She used to run a composting program for AHS, but explained that it was too much to put on a single teacher. If the association of Living Earth and AP Environmental Science or even an association of students would team up to create a composting program that could advertise composting and throwing away trash into the proper trash bins in AHS, the school would likely become much cleaner, and maybe could lead to bigger effects in the future.

“Well, the one thing on all of our biology curricula is that we get to know what climate change is, how we can make efforts to combat it and how we can prevent it altogether.” said Mrs. Penaverde, a Living Earth teacher. She explains that to spread awareness of climate change in her class, she would implement more of climate change specifically into the curriculum and do more projects and assignments on the topic itself. The topic of climate change should be a bigger topic than it is currently, since it is only taught for a few weeks. “I believe that we should make the students do more projects that take the students outside, letting them learn more about climate change and become aware of it.” she said. This could mean projects related to measuring and comparing temperatures, wind speed, and other variables in climate change.

Global warming has come to the point where the Earth will continue to get warmer until the Earth’s end, so we must combat this with our best efforts. Even if it is simply in AHS, the effects could be inspirational to others. (Art Credit: Jovina Zion Pradeep (12).

Everybody knows about climate change, but the problem is that nobody cares. Frankly, nobody really knows enough about climate change to even care about it. But, with clubs and courses like Environmental Science, it is possible to learn more about the effects and causes of climate change, and even combat against climate change in our own little way. For example, rather than throwing banana peels away, composting with other eaten fruits and vegetables is an option. Instead of throwing away paper and cardboard, recycling could reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. But, these methods can only be effective if someone actually does it. Imagine Earth 50 years from now, when global warming has got to the point where the world is 10 degrees warmer than it should be. Simply laying down at home would cause sweat to build up, so climate change should be a topic to care about. Climate change should be taken seriously.
