AHS recently hosted its annual open house on the evening of February 6th, giving incoming students and their families a glimpse into the school’s academics, extracurriculars, and community. With over 600 attendees, the event provided a chance for future Eagles to explore their future campus, learn about different courses, and hear from current students and staff.

For many middle schoolers, the open house helped ease the nerves of the transition to high school. “The open house has made me less nervous to come here,” said Reethika Nandam (8), a student from Thornton Middle School. “There’s been a lot of things that I’ve found very interesting. The sports teams and the art are cool.”

Rohan Trivedi (8), Challenger School (Ardenwood campus) student, echoed this excitement after learning about American’s many extracurricular opportunities. “It was a really pleasant experience. All of the teachers who spoke seemed like they knew a lot about their subject and I felt like I got to learn about American’s classes, clubs, and experiences,” said Trivedi. “I definitely want to take up the soccer team, robotics club, and Principles of Engineering.” However, extracurriculars were not the only attraction at the event.

Adeleaki Yoshi (8), also from Thornton Middle School, discovered new academic interests. “Open house was very interesting. I found out that I want to take Architecture and Spanish,” she said.

Beyond introducing potential students to their options, the event was also an opportunity for parents to better understand high school life. ASB Treasurer Ishan Gandhi (12) emphasized ASB’s role in making the experience smooth for families. “ASB is here to make sure parents know where to go, the logistics of high school, and about courses,” Gandhi said. “We provide a student perspective about how the school is run.”

The open house featured four main presentations led by the administration, covering topics such as academics, the PLTW STEM pathways, honors and AP courses, and general helpful information for students new to American High. “The main thing is to be approachable,” said Gandhi. “We want freshmen to know reality and how to best adjust.”

As the event wrapped up, families left with a clearer picture of what to expect at AHS. Whether through exploring course offerings, meeting faculty, or discovering new interests, the open house succeeded in welcoming the next generation of students.
